MoneyWise, one of the largest personal finance publishers in the country, recently asked me to help readers understand the fees that quietly add up when you buy or sell a home. A new study put the cost of these hidden fees at roughly two billion dollars a year.
My contribution came down to one idea. Split the fees into two piles. Real third-party costs like title, appraisal, and recording sit in the first pile, and each has a vendor behind it. The brokerage's own admin fee sits in the second pile, and that's the one worth questioning. If nobody can tell you what the fee pays for, that's your answer, and you have more room to push back than most people assume.
You can read the full MoneyWise piece here. For the longer version, including which fees are actually negotiable and when to ask, I wrote a complete guide on real estate junk fees.
Being asked to weigh in on a national consumer-finance story reflects how I work with my own clients. Fee transparency, plain answers, and keeping more money in your pocket. If you're buying or selling in Breckenridge or Summit County, that's the standard you should expect from an advisor.
